Dear Readers of Sino-Indonesia Cultural and Economic Association,
First of all, as the Chairman (Representative) of Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei, I would like to convey our great appreciation to Sino-Indonesia Cultural and Economic Association’s for the contribution to promote Indonesia and Taiwan’s economic and cultural partnership since 1971. I have a very high regard for your publicity and expect Sino-Indonesia Cultural and Economic Association’s could further promote the cooperation between Indonesia and Taiwan in many fields of cooperation economic, social – culture and education.
It’s our pleasure to share our achievement to promote a close cooperation between Taiwan and Indonesia in the field of economic, investment, tourism, education and culture etc.
In the past three years, we have held many activities to increase the interactive opportunities between Indonesia and Taiwan. We are looking forward to bringing more and more activities to promote bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Taiwan.
Taiwan is an important trade partner to Indonesia. Bilateral trade in 2006 was USD 7.7 bn whilst Indonesia exported USD 5.21 bn (a surplus of USD 272m). Main items from Taiwan are chemicals, machinery, etc. and main items to Taiwan are natural resources (natural gas, cruel oil, log, coal, nickel, and copper), chemistry materials, paper, etc. In addition, there are around 105,000 Indonesian workers in Taiwan.
In terms of inward investment, although Taiwan only ranks number 6 (as of May 2007, 1, 175 investment projects and amounts USD 13.5bn), Taiwan is in priority list for Indonesian FDI.
Main reason is the nature of investment projects from Taiwan is different from the ones from the FDI top list. Top FDI investment projects from Japan, United Kingdom, and United States, etc. are all more or less nature resources oriented. Whilst the investment projects from Taiwan are in the fields of Machinery, electronics, textile, and transportation related, etc. As nature resources will be drained soon or later and nature resources oriented projects are not helpful for Indonesian industries’ development. In comparison, Taiwan investment projects bring not only the jobs creation but also the improvement of Indonesian industries. This is the reason why Indonesia is keen to get FDI from Taiwan. Famous Taiwan investment projects from Taiwan are ABC President (President Group), Overseas Petroleum & Investment Corp, ACER, Foomaco Group, Tsuang Hine Industrial, Kymco Motorcycle, Pouchen Group, Chin Fong Group, Sanyo Poetery Co. Ltd., Wan Hai Group, etc.
Furthermore, in order to improve the investment environment, Indonesia government promulgated policies as:
1. Launched Indonesia’s biggest anti-corruption drive
2. Introduced new investment law
3. Launched USD 150bn 5-year infrastructure program
4. Plans to revise social security and manpower laws
5. Challenged more than 100 local government regulations
6. Is discussing with parliament to revise tax law
It seems these have worked as enacting the growth of GDP (5.5 in 2006 and expected 6.0 in 2007) and slowdown the inflation (13.3 in 2006 and expected 6.6 in 2007).
There are also many Indonesian students studying here in Taiwan today. In addition to that, the number of Indonesian bride married with Taiwanese over these past years has approximately reached 26.000 people, ranking the third after Mainland China and Vietnam. This is a reflection of the close ties that exist between Indonesia and Taiwan. We hope the existence of Indonesian society in Taiwan will bring great contribution to Taiwan and Indonesia relationship.
Indonesia is the largest archipelago and the fourth most populous country in the world. Indonesia is a huge archipelago country extending 5.150 kilometers from east to west and 1.600 kilometers from north to south. Indonesia is renowned for its agricultural products thanks to the fertile soil and climate. Rich in its natural resources, Indonesia possesses abundant reserves of natural energy, oil and gas.
Known as “the Belt of Emerald across the Equator”, Indonesia consists of more than 300 tribes and over 500 traditional dialects. These facts make unity become a challenge for our nation, as our motto “Unity in Diversity” slogan. Through the pro-active cultural and tourism promotion and supported by Sino-Indonesia Cultural and Economic Association, the rich cultures and beautiful panorama, it will bring more Taiwanese to visit the beautiful Indonesia.
To conclude, I would like to express a sincere appreciation of Sino-Indonesia Cultural and Economic Association upon bringing a better communication and interactive between people of Taiwan and Indonesia. May all prospective success ahead of us, and produce a tightened and most beneficial to better economic.
